Plant service FAQ

Q :

What is “Greenscaping”?

A :

The goal of greenscaping (or green-scaping) is to install and maintain interior plants using environmentally sound methods and technology. All of us at Coast Live Tropicals fervently believe in greenscaping and in protecting the environment. Here are just a few of the ways that we’re trying to keep our planet (and offices) green:

  • Our modern planting methods allow us to provide the same unparalleled service in just half the visits of other companies – something that saves resources by keeping one less car on the road.
  • We use recycled materials – containers, soil, top dressing, staging material – whenever possible.
  • We use reclaimed water, which protects and preserves one of our most valuable resources.

Q :

Will reclaimed water hurt plants?

A :

Just the opposite. Plants love reclaimed water.

Q :

What are contained watering systems?

A :

Contained watering systems are state-of-the-art plant containers that are equipped with a fill tube (to bring water to the plant) and a reservoir (to hold excess water).

Some of the benefits of contained water systems include:

  • Plants need to be watered less frequently – which reduces your home or office water bill.
  • Top soil stays dry – which protects your home or office buildings against molds and fungus.
  • Your property is protected against water damage from leaky pots.

Q :

Can potted plants bring mold and fungus into my office or home?

A :

Potted plants cared for using the outmoded “drench and drain” watering method can be a breeding ground for molds, fungus, and gnats.

Coast Live Tropicals’ state-of-the-art contained watering systems and hydroculture methods virtually eliminate the possibility of bringing uninvited guests into your interior spaces.

Q :

How do you protect my plants and living/work space from bugs?

A :

We at Coast Live Tropicals use a number of proven methods that protect your office and house plants from bugs, such as:

  • Continuously monitoring your plants.
  • Cleaning your plants regularly to ensure that they (and your home or office/workplace) are pest free.
  • Using only safe, natural remedies so you can be assured of a safe home or work environment.

We are also state licensed pest control applicators. So you can have peace of mind knowing that we have the experience and expertise to keep your plants and indoor spaces healthy, beautiful, and pest free.

Q :

Do you rent plants for special occasions?

A :

Coast Live Tropicals offers plant rentals for all of your special occasions: holidays, weddings, parties, birthdays, and business affairs. We’ll also help you select appropriate ones that will make your event memorable, unique, and beautiful.

Q :

Can you revive my tired-looking plants?

A :

You are one phone call away from having your tired or sick plants brought back to life. We can clean, polish, trim, and repot your favorite plants, and eliminate any unwanted pests that have made a home in them.

Q :

Can you spruce up my patio?

A :

You can enjoy attractive outdoor potted plants on your patio with our controlled watering systems. Some benefits of controlled watering systems are no more leaky pots, virtually no maintenance, and lower water bills.

Q :

Do you offer seasonal bloomers?

A :

Our custom blooming plant programs can bring the beauty of flowers to your office and home – and they’re longer lasting and less expensive than cut flowers.

Q :

What is hydroculture?

A :

Hydroculture is an advanced method used in Europe for growing plants in soil-less media.

Some of the benefits of hydroculture include:

  • A clean and easy way to grow container plants.
  • The elimination of mold and fungus in your home or office.
  • A soil-less method for growing plants, which eliminates pests and reduces mess in your office or home environment.
  • A water level indicator that lets you know at a glance if the plant needs to be watered and prevents over-watering.

Q :

Can you care for plants I purchased elsewhere or that are guaranteed under another service plan?

A :

We would be happy to care for your plants. Our first step is to determine your plants' health by observing them for a 30-day period.

Once we know your plants’ needs, we’ll present you with service plan options.

Q :

How is Coast Live Tropicals’ potting mix better for the environment?

A :

Most potting mixes use sphagnum peat as their main ingredient. But picking sphagnum peat is extremely damaging to the environment, leaving the harvested area looking like it’s been clear cut.

Coast Live Tropicals’ coco peat is a by-product of crushed husks of coconuts, so there is no damage to the environment. Coco peat also holds water more effectively than sphagnum peat, is cleaner, and is naturally resistant to a variety of diseases.
